Torqeedo 2.0/4.0 is Strong, Silent Type
by Ted Lund
Outboard motors are going green thanks to new electric offerings from industry alternative energy leader Torqeedo.
The German company’s Cruise 2.0/4.0 pack power and unrivaled overall efficiency in a small, compact package that will take you further than any other outboard with a comparable battery supply.
Perfect for boats on green lakes, sailboats or for commercial users, the 2.0 (5 h.p. equivalent) and 4.0 (8 h.p. equivalent) are designed to meet the harshest daily challenges encountered by commercial users while incorporating hi-tech, intelligent features at its core.
The Cruise series is available in either T (tiller) or R (remote) control configurations, making them perfect for a wide range of on-the-water applications.
The tiller series of engines is perfect for everything from dinghies up to auxiliary power on a 4-ton sailboat. The unique LCD display on the tiller provides the operator with information on battery charge status, remaining range, speed overground and power input. The tiller also features a variable input throttle to control both forward and reverse gears.
The remote series features an LED binnacle mount control that provides the same up to date information and can be controlled from a traditional helm control.
Regardless of the series, the Torqeedo Cruise family shares the same high-quality construction of the outboard unit. The lower unit is constructed of solid aluminum, protecting against damage from running aground. The aluminum is also hard-anodized for long service life under harsh conditions. The aluminum skeg is coated in polyurethane foam providing even more impact protection. Shaft sealant rings are located on the interior of the lower unit and lubricant-free polymer plain bearings protect against damage from fishing lines or debris and provide improved mechanical support for propeller shaft.
The Cruise range is compatible with Torqeedo’s Torq Traq technology, which allows your smart phone to interface wirelessly with your engine via bluetooth. Torq Traq allows your phone to display speed, range and battery life features as well as position waypoints.
Regardless of which motor you choose, they benefit from Torqeedo’s long-life, extended-range lithium batteries in the 26-104. In electric boating applications, lithium batteries like the 26-104 easily save more than 70% of battery weight, feature substantially higher energy densities and the ability to deliver their rated capacity at faster discharge rates. Other advantages over traditional battery systems include: higher charge stability over time and better cold-weather performance,
Torqeedo’s unique battery and propulsion system also benefits from a host of charging accessories including traditional outlet charging and several different solar-powered charging options.
