We Are Still…All in This Together!

by Amy Lignor

December 7, 1941. Sunday morning was lovely on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. A typical Sunday, in fact, where people were moving calmly and in a relaxed “weekend-mode” stance at the U.S. Navy’s Wounded Warrior Project, Remember, Honor,Teach, Trees for Troops, Armed Forces, Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, Toys for Tots, DonatePacific Fleet Headquarters. Just before the clocks struck 8:00 a.m., however, the country of Japan
launched planes from six aircraft carriers in what would be considered the “first wave” of Operation Hawaii. An operation that would go down in history as “Pearl Harbor.”

Shock. Heartache. The American public felt every wave of pain possible. With most of the attention focused on Europe and the monster being called Hitler, Pearl Harbor was even more of a surprise. A stab in the back that caused the U.S. to suffer severe damage or complete and utter destruction of 18 ships and, worse yet, a loss of more than 2,400 honorable, courageous people.

What the Japanese had not done, however, was bury the U.S. Something many countries before and since that time have attempted to do and failed. Instead, America rose behind their men, women, government, and the flag that they were all so proud of and decided that America would not be the “loser” in any battle in which it fought. And the very next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with a unanimous supporting vote by the Senate and all but 1 lone member of the House, declared war. America went on to prove they would not be defeated, and the rallying cry that came from the people was: “We’re All in this Together.” And, in 2016, we still are.

This coming week there will be remembrances for those courageous heroes who changed the landscape of the world; stopping a regime from taking over that would have caused the entire planet to suffer greatly at the hands of tyranny and oppression. Being that we are also in the holiday season now – a chance for each and every one of us to show support and volunteer time, money, donations of toys (whatever is possible), is upon us. And it’s important to remember that not only can we help, but we should. Here are some doing tremendous work that you can be proud to be a part of.

Among the organizations and events that need our help to support the bravest of all people who fought to protect us is, “Wreaths Across America.” On December 17, 2016, the National Wreaths Across America Day takes place. Sticking to their mission to “Remember, Honor and Teach,” wreath-laying ceremonies are being coordinated at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as over 1,100 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea, and abroad.

You can also go to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) and provide comfort to an injured warrior with a one-time donation. You can make this gift in honor or memory of an individual from your own circle, or simply to help the WWP do their work. At WWP, their mission is to help thousands of injured warriors returning home from the current conflicts, as well as providing much-needed assistance to their families.

Heroes Relief, Inc., takes care of the ones who took care of us. Helping veterans in need, as well as their family members, Heroes Relief provides everything from food, shelter and clothes to something as simple as a family outing, and with your help this Christmas, they can do even more.

Stop by Military Benefits on the Internet and go to their information page. There, you will see dozens of ways to help during the holiday or Christmas season. With your time or donation, you can aid those men and women who served and are serving and truly make a difference to their families.

You can call a local USO branch or area armed services recruiter for a program list and select which one(s) you would like to donate to.

At Operation We Are Here/Christmas, the chances to help military families are endless. You can nominate a military family for the Christmas Décor program, where each holiday season each Christmas Décor franchisees nationwide donate their products, resources and time to decorate the homes of local military.

There is also Trees for Troops, which is a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation. This program provides real trees to Armed Forces members and their families in the U.S. Through your contributions, donations of real Christmas trees, and volunteering your time, Trees for Troops can bring the true spirit of Christmas to thousands of deserving service men and women.

Yet another program is the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which distributes new toys for needy children in local children’s homes, hospitals, and social service agencies.

No matter how much time moves forward, never forget that heroes dwell all around us. So spread the love and joy, and especially thanks to them and their families for their continued sacrifice to keep us all safe.
